Seasonal flooding initially hit Osceola County's low lying Muskegon River areas on April 5th - April 11th, reaching significant flood levels and resulting in a Local State of Emergency. After flood waters temporarily receded, an additional period of rains combined with saturated ground resulted in extraordinary flooding on April 14th in both the Evart and Marion area along with with damage / destruction of roadways countywide. Osceola County declared a Local State of Emergency on April 14th and was added to a list of Michigan Counties for a Governor's Disaster Declaration on April 15th. * Since, Osceola County Emergency Management has been supporting response/recovery efforts with flood waters peaking at 16.19 on Friday 17th.
Osceola County is currently under a Local State of Emergency and supported by a Governor's State of Emergency. The Emergency Operations Center is activated providing emergency support to the following incidents:
Evart Flooding: Evart Area Fire Dept is implementing river welfare checks, safety actions (i.e. securing propane tanks), as well as doing damage assessment. More information on their operation can be found via the Evart Fire Dept Facebook Page
Marion Flooding: Currently has no emergency operations, however, is continuing monitoring/assessing damage.
County Roads: The Road Commission continues to work on repairing and re-routing the numerous roads damaged from flooding. This is a long process and will be in the works the foreseen future.
Shelter @ Spring Hill Camp: A community shelter has been established for overnight accommodations as well as showers and breakfast / lunch. American Red Cross and C.E.R.T. members are on site for assistance.
Recovery: Priority 1 is electrical re-connects. Great Lakes Energy is working to restore power in the area as soon as flood water recedes to a safe point. Additional recovery services will be announced as soon as possible.
Flood waters are expected to slowly recede over the next 3 - 5 in the Evart area. * Recovery services and programs are in development and should be announced mid-week. * Great Lakes Energy are working with County officials to expedite re-connects (Note: It is expected that this cannot occur until flood waters recede to less than 12ft).
For general non-emergency information on community services, please call 2-1-1.
For Evart area flooding, monitor Evart Fire Departments Facebook page (they are posting 2 times a day)
Please avoid flooded areas if at all possible, even though waters have receded there remain debris and other hazards in the area.
